Amiga Platform Information

The following is a first attempt at an introduction to the Amiga platform. For a platform with such a complicated history, there are bound to be mistakes and errors, so if you find any please let me know and I will endeavour to correct them!

Most of these sections are not done yet or are incomplete, please have patience this is a big project!

Further Information

There are litterally thousands of Amiga-oriented web sites, news groups, file archives and so on. The following is a small directory of some of the places you may want to check out if you are discovering the Amiga for the first time or are looking for more information.

USENET Newsgroups

comp.sys.amiga.advocacy - full of the usual "my computer is better than your computer" debates
comp.sys.amiga.announce - moderated newsgroup for official postings only
comp.sys.amiga.applications - discussion of third party Amiga apps
comp.sys.amiga.audio - all about Amiga audio
comp.sys.amiga.cd32 - the CD32 was the world's first 32-bit games console
comp.sys.amiga.datacom - communicating with the Amiga
comp.sys.amiga.emulations - emulators and emulation
comp.sys.amiga.games - DOOM and all those sorts of things...
comp.sys.amiga.graphics - all about Amiga graphics
comp.sys.amiga.hardware - gets very techie
comp.sys.amiga.introduction - a good place for finding out more
comp.sys.amiga.marketplace - just in case we should ever get one back again...
comp.sys.amiga.misc - the most lively Amiga newsgroup around!
comp.sys.amiga.multimedia - the Amiga was a multimedia computer before the phrase had been coined
comp.sys.amiga.networking - yes, you can do it!
comp.sys.amiga.programmer - another techie one
comp.sys.amiga.reviews - you name it, someone will have reviewed it
comp.sys.amiga.uucp - well, um, UUCP on the Amiga I expect

Of course there are loads more in other hierarchies, notably alt, and it is always worth checking to see if your ISP runs an Amiga newsgroup of their own on their news server, especially as the ones above can get very busy.

FTP Archives

AmiNet - the only one you need! Officially the world's largest publically available software archive, AmiNet contains literally gigabytes upon gigabytes of software for the Amiga. And as if that wasn't good enough, a lot of it is free too! The link is to the main archive in the US, but there are plenty of mirrors all around the world so I suggest you find the one which is closest to you.

Amiga International Inc. - the marketing division of Amiga, based in Germany
Amiga Inc. - the research and development arm of Amiga, based in the USA
Amiga.org - find the official Amiga Developer and User Group Networks here
The Amiga Web Directory - possibly the Amiga's most popular web site, form CUCUG
Gateway 2000 - nothing much Amiga-wise here, but Gateway are the company behind the Amiga
ICOA - the Industry Council for an Open Amiga
The Jay Miner Society - for the progression of personal computing. Jay Miner was the man behind the Amiga
Altos' AmigaOS pages - Our partner, AltOS, has a very nice page on the Amiga OS
